The Summer Recall Chapter 1 cont.. De-Shane

De-Shane

Ever since, Latifah, told me she was coming to spend the summer in Atlanta from London I haven’t stopped smiling. When  I look back on the time we had together last summer  I become giddy. I love Tifa, she is just an amazing friend. We have a lot of fun together and we are similar in many ways. I call T my mirror because she shows me parts of myself that amplify my good parts and shed light on parts that need to be improved.

I tried to get into school in the UK for Tee and me to be close to one another. I tried getting into her particular university but my application oddly enough kept getting lost in the mail. Eventually, my parents felt it best that I apply to schools in Canada because they had heard Canada was a great place to study. I got into Carleton University in Ottawa on a full scholarship and had to give up my dream to study in the UK.

But, life has a funny way of working out. Once I moved to Canada, I made a decision to focus on my studies and not get involved with anyone. I did not want anything or anyone to tie me down to Canada.  On the first day of my human biology class, Marsha walked into the classroom and  I couldn’t keep my eyes off her.  Something about her made my heart skip a beat. Human biology class soon became my favourite class. I would get to class early just so I could watch her walk into class.  She wasn't particularly the prettiest girl but she is funny, sweet, kind and always asking poignant questions. She had me intrigued.

One day after class she walked up to me as I gathered my books. “Hey I see you staring at me in class, is there something you would like to say to me? She coyly asked. “Errrr ummmm nooo”, stuttering to find the right response not to scare her off with my answer. “I think you’re cute and I can’t help but look” I blurted out wishing I could take back what I just said. (“You are soo stupid why did you just say that?”)I berated myself silently. She smiled, “Direct and honest, I like that,” She said to me. I was relieved. I thought I had blown my chance. “By the way I’m Marsha and you are”? “Errrrrr right my name” as I struggled to remember my name” (“Look here buddy you are definitely not scoring any cool points with this girl)” I screamed to myself in my head. “Ummm my name is De-Shane but everyone calls me Dee,” I said to her. “Hmmm De-Shane, I like that. Unique.  Does it mean anything? “Marsha asked? “Not really, it’s just my parents’ names put together. My mom's name is Denise and My dad's name is Shane so hence De-Shane” She smiled  so maybe one day our kid will be called De-marsh?” She jokingly said. “Maybe Marshane” I responded laughing as well.  “I was just off to grab some lunch at the cafeteria, if you don’t have any plans would you join me? She asked me. I had promised to call Tifa after my class but, this is what I had dreamed of time; with Marsha. I  told myself I would call her after lunch and quickly nodded yes in agreement and walked off with Marsha. After that day, Marsha and I were inseparable.
