The Summer Recall: Maame
Maame
I walked through the door after a long
drive home from school. It was the longest drive of my life. Adewale had driven
us home and my goodness it was so difficult having a conversation with him. I
love to chat and Adewale is awfully quiet. I mean I don’t mind a guy who is quiet because it shows me he is a good listener. But at the very least he should engage in
conversation. But, with Wale, as everyone likes to call him,
he just nods and doesn’t give a response back. It was such a chore. But hey! He
is super fine, tall and one of the most eligible men on campus. I would see him around campus. He just completed his junior year of college and I just completed my freshman year. My friends would point out his interest in me. One day, as I sat in the library trying to inhale all of “Intro into Economics” into my head when I saw him
slide into the empty chair next to me. I turned around and he introduced
himself as Adewale. I was beside myself with excitement and nervousness. He started speaking and I was mesmerized by how white his teeth were and that
Adewale Oluremi Francis was actually speaking to me. Eventually, I came round in
time to hear ''would you like to grab a coffee from the café'? I nodded yes, too
dumbstruck to utter the word yes. By the time we finished our coffee, he had scheduled our next date. From that time onwards we were inseparable.
What I didn’t realize was how dull Wale could be, he was so low key and his idea of a date was just hanging out in his flat off campus watching movies. It wasn’t as if we spent hours just kissing our faces off, but we just sat there and actually watched movies. I remember the first time we kissed, I literally had to initiate our first kiss. He is dull. I’m craving some excitement in my life. But, he has a car so when he offered to drive us back to London, I agreed. Hey, who would reject a free ride home.
As I walked through the door, I heard my cellphone ring, it was Kukua. I was wondering why she was calling since we had just spoken right before we left campus that morning. “Hello” as I struggled to bring my bags through the door. “Hey Maame, you won’t believe what I have to tell you?” Kukua isn’t one to share gossip so if she had something to tell it had to be really juicy. “I quickly put my bags down and rushed to sit on the stairs. “Remember I told you my girl was arriving from London to spend the summer?” she excitedly asked “Oh Yes, I remember, um Latifah if I’m right?”I asked unsure if I got her name correctly. “Right right” she hurriedly said, “anyways she just called me to say her cousin Kojo is having his annual Summer party and he asked her to invite all her fittest friends.” “wait wait, which Kojo …?“ I had to make sure it was ‘The Kojo’ the Kojo who had all the hottest parties in the Ghanaian community. Kukua didn’t even wait for me to finish my sentence. “The Kojo Appiah” The guy who has people pleading at the door to let them into his party. “AHHHHHHHHHHH” I screamed as if I had just won the lottery. “OMG Kukua, I’ve been dying to go to one of his parties, how did she get invited?” I asked already thinking of calling my girl Ewurabena to bunk at her place in Virginia. “Kojo is Latifah's cousin and they are super tight. When he found out she was coming to the US he made sure to extend the invitation.” She explained excitedly “OMG, I don’t even know your friend Tifa but I already love her,” I excitedly said. 'Goodness me when is the party? I asked hoping it wouldn't be a weekend my parents needed me to stay to babysit my youngest brother “It is July 4th weekend in Maryland." "By the way" Tifa's friend's parents own a huge mansion in Fairfax Virginia and her parents are away for the summer so she has offered up her place for us to stay," Kukua stated. "Oh that is amazing, I was going to call Ewurabena to see if I could crash at her place but I will forgo that option," I said to Kuuks. "Anyways I have to go, I have to meet up with Tifa to go shopping, we are thinking of taking the bus but we are trying to see if we can all chip in and rent a car to go"." Oh, and FYI invite your girls this is the party of the summer," Kukua said before she hung up.
