The Summer Recall : Chapter 2 - Latifah
Latifah
I always feel so giddy when I talk to Dee.
We always get so caught up that we forget about what is going on around us. I
knew this summer was going to be so much fun. I hadn’t realized we had been on
the phone for over an hour. Hmm... I wonder where his girlfriend was that he was
able to be on the phone with me that long? Anyway, who cares, I haven’t spoken
to him in months and so there was clearly a lot to catch up on. He agreed to
come to the party with his boy Jeremy. I didn’t know who Jeremy was but
hopefully, he was fit. Or as the Americans say foiiinnee! Yes, I wonder if he is fine. If he is fit and single then maybe he and I could link up… I had to stop myself
from thinking too far. Besides, I was currently getting to know this guy called
Alfred.
I started to get myself ready for bed. After taking a shower and brushing my teeth, I took myself
to bed and lay in bed, creating scenarios in my head until I fell asleep dreaming
of how much fun this party was going to be and finally reuniting with Dee.
It was finally July 4th weekend and Kuuks and I were going to meet up with her friend Maame to drive down to Maryland. and I was super
excited. I had spent two weeks working on my resume and job hunting. Thankfully, living with family,
my cousins always made sure there were enough groceries for me so I was able to save
my money and eat at home. But I had spent my time in Atlanta, pounding the pavements around Peachtree Street and Piedmont Ave. Going from shop to shop dropping off my
resume and so far no luck. I just need something to tide me over during the
summer just so I can make a bit of money. Today is a brand new day and the day we take our road trip. I don’t want to focus on my lack of employment and just focus on the drive. Kukua had called me earlier to link up with her friend Maame so we can drive head to Buckhead to pick her up so we can make it down to the DMV. As I sat waiting to hear from Kukua’s friend Maame, I went through my weekend bag to make sure I had my whole
outfit packed. I wanted to make sure I looked super fine. I had gotten a nice
crop top with low rider jeans. I had braided my hair before I came to Atlanta so
I will have it in a ponytail and I had some brand new puma sneakers. I had big hoop earrings and my blue baby phat tiny purse with my newsboy cap. I also made sure I had enough underwear and clothes to cover me for the rest of the trip. As I
went over my outfit again, my phone rang. It was a number I didn’t recognize. I
answered. “Hello”… “Hello Hi this is Maame, Kukua’s friend is this Latifah?” I heard Maame say. I responded“Ohh
Hi, yes it is are you here should I come outside I asked? “Not quite yet, I wanted to let you know I will be at your place in 5 mins will you meet me outside I want us to hit the highway before traffic hits. You know what Atlanta traffic can be like.”? She said “Yes yes yes, I'm all packed up and I will sit out on the porch and wait for you. I stated“ That's great, I should be pulling up shortly just remind me what is the street and house number again” Maame added. “
Yes it's 20 Apple Blossom Street" I added. " Cool I'm driving a red Jeep so look out for me." She added. " Great I think I see you." I waved so she could see me. I grabbed my bag and bounced down the steps of the porch and headed for the car. Excited butterflies flew around my tummy.
